In 1987, Jeep released the Wrangler YJ, a modern refresh their long-beloved Wrangler CJ. This new Jeep Wrangler came with a host of upgrades, including better on-road handling, “modernized” interior, and minor improvements to the frame and powertrain. Most notably, though, this new model ditched the classic round headlights in favor of square (well, rectangular, if you feel like splitting hairs) headlights. These headlights would become the literal and figurative "face" of the wrangler until 1996, when they switched back to circular ones.

Fast forward to 2019, when Greg Henderson, owner of Unofficial Use Only, embarked on creating the ultimate throwback to the original Wrangler YJ. He created the Jeep Gladiator “Inlander” for Steer Smarts to display at their SEMA booth. The Inlander is a fully capable 2020 Jeep Gladiator with a YJ-style square headlight throwback grille, decals styled after the YJ Islander models, a Magnuson supercharger, and a bunch of off-road goodies. In 2021 Greg raised the bar even higher with the “YJL” that he built for Quadratec. Quadratec was started around a 1989 Wrangler (YJ) Sahara and for their 30th anniversary, Greg recreated their 89’ Sahara on the platform of a modern 2020 JL Wrangler. Greg meticulously crafted the YJL to be the perfect blend of old and new styling and performance. For the YJL, Greg hand crafted another grille with square headlights and finished it off with a throwback flat steel front bumper. Due to popular demand Greg’s hand-crafted grille has been 3D scanned and recreated in the computer as a kit that anyone can install on their JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator. The kit will make its first appearance at the 2023 SEMA show and is currently in the process of becoming officially licensed by Jeep.

The grille will be made with OEM materials and manufactured with better than OEM quality. We call this “OEM-plus” engineering.
